Inspired by John Berger’s 1972 art documentary series Ways of Seeing, this film group will critically explore documentaries about the visual arts.
While our focus this year will primarily be on painters, we’ll also explore films on other types of artists, museum exhibitions, and various other creative processes. What can we learn about artists and creativity from documentaries? How can we better understand the influences of art and the practices of artists through film? Together, we’ll explore documentaries as a method of engaging with painting, echoing Berger’s belief in art’s capacity to reflect and respond to cultural, political, and societal norms.

The Athenæum is deeply grateful to our wonderful volunteer leaders. Please note library reading groups are not classes or courses, but rather a way for individuals to discuss readings together, guided by both expert and amateur enthusiasts. Participants should expect discussion-based, not lecture-style meetings.
