Acclaimed mystery novelist Jack Partridge (writing as J.J. Partridge) joins Sam Coale, Professor of English at Wheaton College and author of The Mystery of Mysteries: Cultural Differences and Designs, in conversation about the contemporary mystery novel.

JJ Partridge’s Algy Temple crime novels are smartly paced tales about the gritty city of Providence, its high times and lowlifes, and the demimonde of the world of pool. Based on intrigue and adventure, sudden twists feature old vendettas, the mob, a restless campus, and a high-stakes pool tournament. Following the success of Carom Shot and Straight Pool, Algy Temple will soon return, in addition to a new Rhode Island-based series in the works. Jack, a seasoned lawyer, is a resident of Providence and Westerly, Rhode Island with his wife, artist and printmaker, Regina.
Sam Coale teaches American Literature and Culture at Wheaton College. His books include The Mystery of Mysteries: Cultural Difference and Designs (2000); Paradigms of Paranoia: The Culture of Conspiracy in Contemporary Fiction (2005); The Entanglements of Nathaniel Hawthorne (2011); and Quirks of the Quantum: Postmodernism and Contemporary American Fiction (2012). He reviews books for the Providence Journal. He has lectured most recently in Japan, Jordan, and Lebanon.
