Tom Hennes, principal and founder of the global exhibition design firm Thinc, discusses his work at New York’s 9/11 Memorial Museum and how to tell the complex story of tragedy, bravery, and the resilience of a nation.

Founder and creative director of Thinc, Tom Hennes is a designer and leader in exhibition design with his approach to design grounded in a deep knowledge of history and world cultures and respect for the environment. Thinc has designed for the Field Museum in Chicago; the Challenge of the Deep exhibition at the Mystic Aquarium; the National Museum of Natural History in the Netherland, the Steinhart Aquarium at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco; the museum at Freedom Park in South Africa and were the lead designers for the World Trade Center Memorial Museum, in partnership with Local Projects. Known to audiences in the US, Europe, Africa and Asia, Hennes designed the stage for the TED conference for nine consecutive years, lectures throughout the world and has taught students at the Rhode Island School of Design and at the Pratt Institute. He serves as Associate Editor Theory & Practice for Curator, The Museum Journal. In his current writing, Hennes explores the ways in which exhibitions and other media can be designed to form and sustain active communities.
