SALON, co-presented with Stages of Freedom: Editors Erika DeSimone and Fidel Louis on their book Voices Beyond Bondage: An Anthology of Verse by African Americans of the 19th Century.
Nearly all early 19th century black-owned periodicals featured an open call for poetry. Free and enslaved African Americans responded by submitting droves of poems for publication, and poetry became their empowerment. These authors wrote to be heard, but their poems have until now been lost to modern readers. Join us to hear their voices at last.
