Providence’s “Golden Ghetto”

Fri, Apr 1, 2016 @ 1 pm3 pm

SALON: Historian Rachael Rosner on “Illuminating the Golden Ghetto of Providence: Aaron Temkin Beck and the Origins of Cognitive Therapy,” Part One.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy, the most influential and ubiquitous form of psychotherapy today, now far exceeds psychoanalysis in the breadth of its clinical influence. Beck, now 94, grew up in Providence’s tightly-knit Jewish immigrant community clustered around Temple Emanu-El, known as the “golden ghetto,” and remained here through his graduation from Brown in 1942. Rosner’s biography of Beck will be published in 2017; join us to learn about this storied neighborhood and one of its most influential sons.

Sponsored by the Gertrude N. and Seebert J. Goldowsky Foundation.

Part Two of this series will be presented by the RI Jewish Historical Association on Sunday April 17, 2016, at Temple Beth-El, 2 PM. Sponsored by the Arline Weinberg Memorial Fund, this program is also free and open to the public.
