Sylvia Moubayed brought her keen eye, forward thinking, and positive energy to the Providence Athenaeum. During her tenure as Executive Director from 1970 to 1981, she inspired the membership to gather together and share her enthusiasm for the restoration of their library and its collections and historic treasures.
Membership flourished as the little library began to transform, blending the best of the 19th century with the dynamics of the 20th century. In November of 1979 came the completion of the Warren Platner addition and the two great glass doors of the Sayles Gorham Children's Library opened. What followed was a renewed dedication, on the part of the Athenaeum community, to honor children with the books and activities that inspire them.
Dan Butterworth's intricately hand-carved puppets dance and whirl from the stage, through the air, and right out into the audience, moving to a stream of infectious world music. A unique cacophony of puppet styles and genres combines and builds until the whole stage becomes one huge moving carnival creature.
Many thanks to our Children's Library Gala Committee members: Julie Boegehold, Kathleen Bower, Kendall Brown, Kate Flanders, Alison Huff, Sandy Markley, Alison Maxell, Wendy Nilsson, Denis Roche, Lindsay Shaw, and Kate Wodehouse.
